"Pasta With a Purpose"
by Heidi Petty

What does it take to clean up a watershed?

Many hands in the dirt?
Many boots in the creek?
Science and studies and research?
One day it may be kids learning about their waterways and pollution, and the next it's simply celebrating our partners' successes!  Contra Costa Resource Conservation District (CCRCD) has been working behind the scenes to improve the health of the county’s watersheds for over 75 years. This year we introduced a proclamation to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, and we are pleased to announce the permanent creation of May as "Watershed Awareness Month" in Contra Costa County.
With the formal proclamation in place, the CCRCD looks forward to future May watershed celebrations across the county. We kicked off the first celebration on May 9th, 2019 surrounded by friends, community members, and supporters to celebrate at our "Pasta with a Purpose" event. We invited the community to raise a fork for clean creeks and shores and share stories of triumph over adversity in their watersheds. Our speakers included our partners and watershed heroes of all ages, as well as a representative from Congressman Thompson’s office and a much appreciated, Appreciation Award from Senator Dodd and Assemblyman Grayson.

This celebration took place at the Crockett Community Center, a location particularly meaningful to the CCRCD as we have been an integral part of the Crockett Restore the Waterfront Project on the Crockett shoreline.  It may be a rare treat, but sometimes we are lucky enough that the reward we receive for a job well done is a celebration and also part of our job! Thank you to all who helped make this event a wonderful occasion, and to our donors and members for all of your support!
We invite you to share your watershed stories with us and continue to work to improve and protect the beautiful watersheds of Contra Costa County.
