"Creek invaders!"
by elissa robinson

The Walnut Creek Watershed Council invites you to learn about invasive plants in your watershed! On October 4th the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District and the Walnut Creek Watershed Council are holding a forum at Diablo Valley College to help you discover more about plant life in our creeks.
  • The event kicks off at 6:00 pm, with tabling in the common area of the Hospitality Studies Building, tours of the Horticulture Program’s greenhouse, and a demonstration of DVC’s GIS drone.
  • At 7:00 pm, the action moves upstairs to the Diablo Room, where the presentations begin. Speakers will discuss invasive plants in Contra Costa County, with a special focus on Arundo donax.
Arundo is a large reed that grows along creek banks. It can be up to 20 feet tall, and creates monocultures by reproducing rapidly and outcompeting native plants for resources, such as water. In early 2018, Dick Heron, from Friends of San Ramon Creek, approached the Council with a project that the San Ramon Valley Methodist Church was looking for advice on. They identified a patch of Arundo behind their church on San Ramon Creek, and were looking for ideas on how to go about addressing the invasion.
Hearing this, Bob Simmons, chairperson of the Walnut Creek Watershed Council and Contra Costa Resource Conservation District Associate Director was inspired to address the issue on a watershed wide level. He worked with volunteers to map and identify Arundo donax throughout all five sub-watersheds. Now, the Council is looking to raise awareness about invasive plants, specifically Arundo, and what we can do to stop their spread. We want people to get outside and involved in projects to help restore their creeks!

Holding the event at DVC will build stronger connections with the local college community and highlight the issue of invasive species in the Walnut Creek Watershed. It will also showcase some of the programs at DVC and give students the opportunity to discover firsthand the sort of careers they can have in the restoration economy.

This is the third biennial Forum that the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District has organized for the Walnut Creek Watershed Council. The goal of each event is to engage, educate, and provide an opportunity for people to connect with each other and their creek. Each event has a different theme, for instance, in 2016, the Living Creeks Forum looked at creek restoration projects in the Bay Area. With this year’s event, the Council is committed to developing an ongoing program that engages high school and college students in their local creeks. They are the future stewards of our creeks.

Day of Action! – In conjunction with creek groups throughout the watershed, we’ll be supporting events where you can go out and get your hands dirty! After learning about why invasive plants are harmful for our creeks, you can get out and do something about it!
