Don’t miss it! “We’re All Downstream” Watershed Art and Poetry Contest is a fun and rewarding way for students of all grade levels in the Pittsburg schools to learn about their watershed community. It is based on the national River of Words program that promotes watershed awareness. Use the information below to introduce students to the watershed concept. Then ask students to share their thoughts on

Winning entries will be displayed and prizes awarded during an afternoon program at the Community Environmental Faire at the Dow Wetlands on May 1. The daylong fair will include a wide variety of environmental exhibits and activities for families.

pictorial display of a watershedWhat is a Watershed?                               Watersheds are nature's boundaries. A watershed is the geographic area consisting of all land that water flows across, under and through on its way to a particular body of water. And we all live in one.

On the edge of a watershed are the landscape's ridgelines, mountains, and hills. If a raindrop falls on the east side of the Continental Divide, it may end up in the Mississippi River. But if it falls just a foot to the west, it travels a different path entirely – one that leads towards the Pacific Ocean.

Everything we do impacts our watershed. Land and water uses from any part of the watershed – such as polluted runoff from homes, cities and ranches – eventually affect the health of the whole watershed.

·          What parts of my watershed do I enjoy, and why?

·          How can I help protect my watershed?
