Don’t miss
it! “We’re All Downstream” Watershed Art and Poetry Contest is a fun and rewarding way for students of all grade
levels in the Pittsburg schools to learn about their watershed community. It is
based on the national
watersheds through an original work of art or poetry. Deadline
for entry submissions is April 23
(see rules on reverse of this flyer). Winning entries will be displayed and prizes
awarded during an afternoon program at the Community
Environmental Faire at the Dow Wetlands on May 1. The daylong fair will include a wide variety of
environmental exhibits and activities for families.
What is a Watershed? Watersheds are nature's
boundaries. A watershed is the geographic area consisting of all land that
water flows across, under and through on its way to a particular body of water.
And we all live in one. On the edge of a watershed
are the landscape's ridgelines, mountains, and hills. If a raindrop falls on the
east side of the Continental Divide, it may end up in the
Everything we do impacts our watershed. Land and water uses from any part of
the watershed – such as polluted runoff from homes, cities and ranches –
eventually affect the health of the whole watershed.
